Twitter and Corporations
Posted on May 17, 2009 at 5:10 pm

The Wall Street Journal recently ran a story on corporate blogs and how “twittering” employees must be aware of running afoul of SEC regulations.
According to the Society for New Communications Research, 81 of Fortune 500 companies have public blogs. Twenty-three of those blogs lead directly to corporate Twitter accounts. With large corporations like Johnson & Johnson now giving updates real time from their annual meetings, the SEC rules of communication can get blurry. We all understand the speed of information, but we may not be alert to its unintended consequences.
So what’s the takeaway for professional services firms, including the publicly traded ones? Before you jump headfirst into social media, publish guidelines for everyone in the firm. Explain in writing how to write a blog post and the editorial procedures. Designate someone well-versed in social media to oversee the firm’s adventure. Be aware of the legal implications of your voice in cyberspace.
Today’s explosion of social media has blurred the lines between personal and work life. As more and more corporations embrace social media, it’s more important than ever to get it right. All we have to fear is fear itself. After all, even the SEC has Twitter accounts. Three feeds in all, to be exact.
