Who is in Control – You or Twitter?
Posted on June 23, 2011 at 10:09 am

Every time you update your company’s Twitter feed with a new tweet, whether personal or professional, both you and your firm are newly exposed to examination by the world at large, as Sarah Palin recently learned. Each tweet becomes a direct reflection of your company’s image.
So how much damage can 140 characters do? Ask Anthony Weiner, only one of the most recent of politicians and other public figures tripped up by Twitter, in cases not entirely of their own doing.
On the Hill as in law, accounting and other professional service firms, tweeting may be done by associates, interns or other staffers, rather than by the officeholders themselves. This leaves room for error due to lack of communication between the person in the spotlight and the person typing the tweets. So much so that Twitter recently emailed Congress tips on keeping their accounts secure: simple things—like using only verified accounts, creating stronger passwords, not clicking on suspicious links and not giving out passwords—were high on the list
The lesson to learn from all this twittering about Twitter is that a simple set of guidelines/best practices on tweeting can minimize incidents and misleading tweets.
