With Google+, Google takes another run at becoming the dominant social media network. While Gmail, YouTube, and Blogger have gained many fans, Google Wave and Google Buzz have failed to threaten Facebook and Twitter because they haven’t attracted the base needed to make them successful. Here we go again. Google+ integrates several of Google’s services into one platform and gives you a personal web identity – sliced and diced to reflect the many sides of you.

The gimmick is a chance to personalize your entire web presence – on Google. Similar to Facebook, minus the privacy concerns, Google+ allows you to share and discuss photos, videos, links and news articles with smaller pockets of friends – “circles” and “huddles” in Googlespeak – rather than with your entire social network. Different strokes for different folks – intimates, good buddies, your bowling team, parents, grandma and grandpa, workmates – each circle sees only, and chats with you about only, what you choose for them. And just like real life, you choose to “hang out” with different circles on different occasions.

“Plus” is still in field trial – Google invited a limited number of people to try it out and has been overwhelmed with requests to be part of the trial group. Long term – over the next year or so – Google will have to persuade millions to ditch Facebook for Google+. Don’t jump just yet, but if Google+ takes off, it wouldn’t hurt to be one of the first in line.
