Site of the Week: Diego Rivera Exhibition Mini-site
Posted on November 23, 2011 at 9:47 am
MoMA.org showcases their modern art with a modern website. The Diego Rivera Exhibition mini-site is an excellent and informative website. Its bold design complements the artist’s work and delves into the artist’s history through its use of multimedia. The Murals page provides insight into the history of each piece. The full-screen high-resolution imagery allows you to zoom in on every brushstroke and emulates the experience of seeing it in person. There are also audio commentary and points of interest that can be clicked on for more information. Some murals even have a slider to compare with the original sketch and an x-ray view to see the fresco’s internal structure.
On the Chronology page, you can scroll though an expansive timeline of Rivera’s activities or jump to important events with the Key Players navigation. Rivera’s New York uses a stylized Google Map to show the landmarks he visited on his 1931 trip. The Materials & Techniques page has archival footage from 1939 of the artist at work and details his process.
The flexible layout and scaling imagery means that the site looks great at any size. The sliding navigation takes up minimal space, but still lets the user easily jump around the mini-site and go back to the main one. The user is continuously rewarded as they explore deeper into the site. The mobile version of the site simplifies navigation, but remains just as informative.
This is an excellent site with a ton of information presented in a clean and usable way.
