History Here, brought to you by the History Channel and A&E Networks, is a free app for the iPhone, iPad, and iTouch and Android, and $2.99 for Windows Phone 7 users; that allows you to see historical landmarks based on your location through GPS or manual entry. Sites include museums, battlefields, parks, forts, famous homes, architecture and monuments in 7,000 locations.

Just enter your zip code or let the GPS determine your location and watch points of interest pop up on a zoomable map or in a list view. You can customize your search radius – it can be 5 to 500 miles from you. When you click on a point of interest, a quick description about the place (written by the history experts at the History Channel) is displayed along with images, video, articles, audio of famous speeches, website and phone numbers (if applicable). If you feel like sharing the location, one click of a button allows you to post it to Facebook, Twitter or email it. You can also save your favorite historical location by pressing the star icon.

Developers are adding thousands more points of interest in the coming months. The History Here app is great mobile tool to explore any location and discover which hidden historical gems lie nearby.

Has your firm thought about using geo-location tagging on your mobile site?

Yeah, what’s the deal History channel? Stop being iPhone snobs and write this app for Droids as well. Not all history lovers are cult following iPhone users!

As a fellow Android (Galaxy Nexus) user I’m with all of you. Coding for them is relatively difficult in comparison to Apple’s processes but worth it (in my humble opinion) to reach such a larger audience.

The post says Android and Windows Phone 7. Is that a misprint? I certainly can’t find it in the play store.

Samantha we’ve corrected that error, thanks for pointing it out! WP7 is available, but not Android. Very saddening for our user base.

All android users rejoice! As of October 11th it looks much more widely available.
