App of the Week: WorldCard
Posted on August 2, 2012 at 10:20 am

Say farewell to stuffing business cards into your rolodex and hello to neatly converted digital versions in your phone with the click of a button. WorldCard is an app for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android and WP7 that allows you to scan a picture of a business card using the OCR (Optical Camera Recognition) camera in your phone. How does it work? Just snap a photo of the card and WorldCard will automatically enter its info straight into your contact list. No more manual entry for contact information, and no network connection is needed.
WorldCard recognizes 16 different languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Spanish and Turkish. It can sort information by name, position, phone number, fax, company, address or other fields, as you choose. It allows you to merge new business cards with existing contacts; add each card’s front and back images and make phone calls and send texts/emails straight from the application. To make sure you never lose a business card again, you can back up your contacts through cloud services (iCloud or Dropbox) so that if your data is ever lost, it can always be restored.
I recommend this app if you have a box full of business cards at home or at the office and never seem to have the correct one on you when you need it. With WorldCard, all of your collected business cards are available at your fingertips. This is a great tool for busy business people who are savvy with their phones and don’t have the time to manually input information. If you gather 5 business cards from a meeting, it would take this app a few minutes to scan and enter the information for you. Time saved is money earned!
