The surrealist concept of the “exquisite corpse” is “a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled.” Originally conceived as a way for artistic collaborators to systematically contribute to a single work, the process has found it’s way into a more technologically interactive world, This Exquisite Forest.

The pleasingly minimalist site allows for users to create their own animations, either as an individual sequence or as an addition to someone else’s work. A budding sapling is used to represent the addition of animations: at each diverging juncture of further sequences, a new branch and leaf appears.

Whatever your opinion of any particular animated sequence is, the truly intriguing aspect of This Exquisite Forest is that it is crowd sourced animation. All created inside a single website. Without Flash. It’s concepts like this that make the Internet such an exciting place. I’d definitely encourage you to check the site out, contribute to an animation and then maybe even start your own. After all, there are worse ways to spend a few moments of your day than flexing your creative muscles, aren’t there?
